Katie started at McAuliffe five years ago as an Articulated Dump Truck (ADT) driver. She is now a qualified 360 Excavator Operator and holds a SSSTS supervisor ticket.
We caught up with her just before she heads off on maternity leave to have her first baby.
What did you want to be when you were younger?
A vet… until I discovered vets had to put ill animals down.
Then I wanted to own my own shop. I worked in a supermarket for a while, but working into the early hours of the morning became too much. So, I took the plunge into driving machines.
How did you get into the industry?
Via my dad and grandpa. I saw what my dad did at UK Coal and, from around 15 years old, I would go with him some Saturday mornings and sit in the big cabs (engine turned off!). That was bonding time with dad, and seeing all the big machines piqued my interest.
What do you like the best about your job?
It feels like a safe family unit. If ever you need something, there are people there to help and support you. I work independently, yet when you want to talk/banter with others, you can.
Learning how to drive the digger was a learning curve. There were times I felt frustrated until a colleague stood by and helped me with no pressure, boosting my confidence.
Any tips for women wanting a career in the industry?
I would advise anyone to drive a machine – man or woman. It’s daunting at first, but you learn from others and everyone is keen to help. My advice? Don’t take any comments too seriously!
There are more women doing these jobs now, it’s not a rarity. I’m treated the same as any other person on site and I enjoy the banter with the lads.
