18-year-old Bonnie recently joined our new Construction Plant Operative Apprenticeship. In just four months, she has gained her roller ticket qualification, and is now learning to drive an Articulated Dump Truck (ADT).
What did you want to be when you were younger?
A primary school teacher. I like helping people and I like the idea of giving back to the people that help me.
How did you get into the construction industry?
I worked in retail before this (most recently in a shoe shop), so this is a complete job change. There are no boring slow periods now, which suits me better, as I’m a hands-on practical person.
My dad (and two sisters!) work in this industry, so I knew of this kind of work from them. I’d always been interested, but wasn’t sure what was available at my age.
This apprenticeship was ideal for me, because I am a quick learner and there are lots of opportunities for training. Everyone around me on site is happy to help me, so I just need to listen and practice!
What do you like most about your job?
I really enjoy it. There are many training opportunities, and I love knowing that I am doing my bit as part of a team.
I am not the only female on this site, there are two of us. And no one looks at you differently as a woman anyway.
Do you have any tips for women considering a career in the industry?
Do it! Don’t worry about what others think. It’s not scary, people accept you, and they want to help you. There is a very clear team mentality.
And there are certainly more girls coming into the industry!
