Complex Remediation:

Challenge

Remediation and enabling works on the site of a former ironworks, bitumen refinery and tar distillery. This was in preparation for the construction of mixed commercial units.

The site had sat derelict for almost two decades, with a complex set of contamination that included hydrocarbon-impacted soils and a 3,500m2 Benzene/TPH-impacted groundwater plume.

A river and railway line were located 100m from the site, as well as a Royal Mail distribution centre.

Solution

We deployed our own Environmental Permit for the works, treating contaminated soil by bioremediation and Stabilisation/Solidification and Modification (S/S). Cement and granulated blast furnace slag was used as binder, which has zero carbon footprint.

After installing sumps onsite, we treated Benzene-impacted groundwater through a pump and treat system. This was followed by a programme of In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO), using our UK-exclusive substrate, Oxygen BioChem (OBC)ā„¢, supplied by Carus Corporation.

Our team removed large concrete obstructions down to 2.5mbgl, reengineering the ground to the agreed earthworks specification. All materials movements were carried out under a detailed Materials Management Plan (MMP), and tracked in real-time using our in-house fleet of intelligent plant.

Results

Soil and groundwater remediation targets were achieved, and we completed the project on time and on budget.

Our team processed over 5,500m3 of material into compliant 6F2 aggregate for reuse, and processed soils to remove 2t asbestos.

In-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) using UK-exclusive substrate

We treated Benzene-impacted groundwater using a pump and treat system, followed by a programme of ISCO.

Our team injected our UK-exclusive substrate, Oxygen BioChem (OBC)ā„¢, into 120 points across the site. We used our in-house mixing trailer to boost efficiency during the injection process, ensuring accurate control of pressures, flow rates and volumes for each point injected.

OBCā„¢, supplied by Carus Corporation, is used to promote chemical oxidation and aerobic bioremediation of petroleum compounds in groundwater. The substrate contains a mixture of oxidants for short-term ISCO, and provides electron acceptors for longer-term biological oxidation.
