McAuliffe trials low carbon HVO fuel on HS2 site

04 May 2022

McAuliffe is trialling fossil-free Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel as a replacement for diesel on one of its HS2 Midlands sites.

HVO is sustainably sourced and uses waste materials, such as cooking oils, which gives it the potential to cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90% compared to diesel.

Alongside trialling the use of HVO, McAuliffe is investing £10.5m in fuel-efficient plant and machinery, and aims to reduce emissions across its sites.

This is combined with smart reuse of materials onsite, with the team using its stabilisation and materials management specialisms to reuse over 90% of materials – and reduce vehicle movements – on many of McAuliffe’s ground engineering projects.

John McAuliffe, Group Managing Director at McAuliffe Group, said:

“It’s important we play our part in reducing emissions, with small changes adding up to substantial carbon reductions over time.

“It will be interesting to see the results of this trial, and take our learnings forward onto client projects.”
