McAuliffe "Makes It Visible" with Lighthouse for Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

20 May 2024

Supporting last week's (13-19 May 2024) Mental Health Awareness Week, McAuliffe welcomed Lee and Jack from the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity's "Make it Visible" team to our Fryers Road project site in Walsall.

Lee and Jack delivered a crucial Toolbox Talk to our team about the importance of mental health awareness on site, introducing attendees to Lighthouse’s free support services and sharing their first-hand life experiences.

Lighthouse’s #MakeItVisible campaign makes welfare and wellbeing support more visible in the construction sector. The charity’s Make It Visible taskforce focuses on health and wellbeing of construction industry workers, aiming to reduce suicide, improve workforce welfare and spread awareness of the charity’s support.

#MakeItVisible: Mental wellbeing awareness in construction with Lighthouse

Over snacks and drinks, this informal Toolbox Talk reiterated the need for conversation around mental wellbeing with our thirty-strong site team, emphasising how important it is to talk rather than to simply say "I'm ok".

Lee and Jack gave a thorough overview of the emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing support available to construction workers and their families via the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity.

These unique sessions by Lighthouse are delivered nationwide to frontline trades by ‘on the tools’ tradesmen, who take a down to earth approach with talks backed by speakers’ real life experiences. The #MakeItVisible tour van is a safe space on site, enabling site colleagues to engage with the Lighthouse team one-to-one if needed.

Mental health support for McAuliffe colleagues

Together with the external support offered by Lighthouse, during Mental Health Awareness Week we signposted colleagues to our internal support that is always available; not least our Medigold EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) and its Thrive App, as well as our company Mental Health First Aiders and champions, who have taken one or two-day specialist courses to help spot the signs of a colleague in need.

Mental Health Awareness Week & Lighthouse

This year’s theme for Lighthouse is “Movement: Moving more for our mental health”.

The charity comments:

“Being physically active is great for our bodies and our minds. No matter how you choose to move your body, starting out small can have large benefits for both our mental and physical health.”

So let’s talk about what we are going through, get moving, and help ourselves as well as each other.

The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity provides free financial, physical and emotional wellbeing support to construction workers and their families.

Those looking for support, help and guidance should call Lighthouse’s free helpline (0345 605 1956) or use free messaging and live chat services (text HARDHAT to 85258).
